Graffiti - The Vice President Edition

Clearly disappointing when the person in charge of your favorite city agency is arrested.  Oh Philly...
Arrest

Catharine and Passyunk  Potatoe?

With all political talk and debate about who Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will chose as their respective running mate, this post is dedicated to Dan Quayle and his spelling of potato. Potatoe?

Growing up, I always liked him and felt bad for him.  Even though I also watched Murphy Brown, I felt his words were maligned.  The Wisdom of Dan Quayle  In the 24 hour news cycle, our leaders, on both sides, have every gaffe recorded and replayed which distracts us from the real issues.  I remember him on Jay Leno at one point and Leno had said that comics make fun of him for stuff like this because there really was nothing else for them to use since he was a good guy.

As a senior in high school, I was on the school newspaper... in the midst of Bill Clinton Presidency/Al Gore Vice Presidency.  Based on a Jay Leno skit of asking Americans basic American citizenship questions (and watching them fail) I decided to ask students and teachers some of the questions.  40% could not name Al Gore as our Veep.  And this was in a magnet/college prep program!  My Calculus teacher answered, "Dan Quayle".

Interesting facts via Wikipedia:

Indiana National Guard service - even though he was a college graduate, he did not become an officer:
"After receiving his degree, Quayle joined the Indiana Army National Guard and served from 1969–1975, reaching the rank of sergeant."

"In November 1978, Quayle was invited by Congressman Leo Ryan of California to accompany him on a delegation to investigate conditions at the Jonestown settlement in Guyana, but Quayle, as it happened, was unable to participate. Ryan was subsequently murdered in events leading up to the Jonestown massacre."

His son, Ben served in Congress.

On to the graffiti.  Anyone want to serve as my Vice President of Fighting Graffiti? :)

The top map shows some older stuff in Chinatown and the University City and Grays Ferry reports.  The bottom is the more close up of Center City.  I have no idea why it's showing stuff at City Hall.

Thursday May 5

Thursday evening was the anniversary of my wife's father's death (yartzeit).  There was a afternoon/evening service in Queen Village in then home of someone who just lost her mother.  We walked down Christian and then up Passyunk to Lombard to catch a taxi home.

6th and Lombard across the street from the church.
7th and Lombard.  Passed this one for a while, but because it was the sabbath, I could never snap a picture of it.

I reported it Philly 311 and they didn't clean it.  I messaged the GPPCC.

Sunday May 8

We went to off to New York... but had to get to 30th St. Station for the bus.  Some graffiti around UPenn and 30th St.

Thursday May 12

It's my birthday and I'll report graffiti if I want to.  Got home late on my birthday.

Friday May 13

Illegal dumping in front of the Marion Anderson Rec Center.  17th between Catharine and Fitzwater.

3rd between Lombard and South.

I went down 18th to Washington to 21st and back home.  I did Washington a few weeks ago.  It's frustrating that graffiti comes back so quickly.  I was also surprised (or not) how much graffiti there was on 21st.

Abandoned home on 21st and Catharine.  Graffiti on it along with litter and brick and broken glass on the sidewalk.

Monday May 16

I95 South between Exits 15 and 17 (no 16).  I've been passing this for a while - hard to get a picture while driving!
South between 17th and 18th.
2nd and Washington
17th and Fitzwater/  See above house meter with same smiley face.
5th between Lombard and South.  Not sure who Smiley is...
Tuesday May 17

Side street off Lombard between 5th and 6th.  Pretty much across the street from my synagogue.
Side street off Lombard between 5th and 6th.  Pretty much across the street from my synagogue.
31st and Grays Ferry

Wednesday May 18
More graffiti on the side streets of Randolph/Reese/Rodman between Lombard and South and 5th and 6th.  I took the picture of the meter and submitted it then walked further in and saw the block just caked in graffiti.  I submitted one request for it... specifically wording to Philly 311 that I was hoping the amazing crew could just get it all rather than needing me to submit multiple requests.  We'll see.

Thursday May 19

Trash on 5th between Lombard and South.  Put out a day early.
18th and Washington
Trash again in front (and now on the Catharine side by the pool) of the Marian Anderson Rec Center.  Trash pickup day is Monday so I hope the can get this beforehand (and hold them accountable).

Friday May 20

I had to go Rittenhouse Hardware on 20th and Pine but could only find parking a couple blocks away (was running other errands hence the driving).  I found graffiti in the 19th and 20th/South to Pine area.

And then off to Starbucks.  Yay having Fridays off in the summer!

Walking down 18th, it has become rather difficult to find graffiti since the city has cleared so much of it.  Did find this repeat one on 18th and South.  The "detox" tag is something else I've see elsewhere and reported.  See above.  Detoxing the city of graffiti is going to take a while.
