Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This week's post is brought to you by the former Frankford Chocolate Factory, "a major blight, this dilapidated, boarded-up hulk of a building surrounded by gentrification."

I drive on Washington Avenue - the area is known as Point Breeze, on the way home and pass by a multitude of graffiti tags, particularly this old Factory on 21st and Washington.  Walking by it, I saw just how tagged up this place was.  I made four separate Philly 311 requests just to make sure they get everything.

As I took pictures, the voice of Aubrey Woods singing the Sammy Davis, Jr. song was playing in my head.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Candy_Man

From 22nd Street.
I hate SPAIN.  No me gusta.

Here is an article on the use of crime fighting techniques to find out the identity of a famous graffiti artist.  Maybe we can use it for some of the tags.

Current Map:

Sunday February 28

My week started shortly after posting last week.

18th and Lombard

Monday February 29
16th and Chestnut.  They are closing these out right away... I e-mailed Philly 311 and they said I have to call a number for mailboxes.  Strange because they have painted them over other times.
34th and Grays Ferry.  SPAIN is back.
Wednesday March 2

5th and South.  Graffiti on the T-Mobile store again.
Christian between 8th and 9th
Washington and Grays Ferry overpass.  Very hard to get a picture while driving.
Thursday March 3
2nd and Christian

Friday March 4

I had a conference at Community College of CCP in the morning.  Three of the parking kiosks had snow... I mean graffiti.  Then back home and CVS via South Street.

CVS 22nd and South.
CVS 22nd and South.
CCP 18th
CCP 17th
CCP 17th
18th and Catharine

Sunday March 6
9th and Bainbridge

5th and Lombard near my synagogue.

In addition to the chocolate factory, I did a few other blocks on Washington.  There are lots of commercial and warehouse places, hence, lots of security gates, hence lots of graffiti on security gates.  There is also the Chew Playground on Washington between 18th and 19th with lots of graffiti around it.

On the way back home, I walked down Christian and found lots of trash in front of several buildings.  And then more on the way to CVS and Rita's (open again!) later in the day.  I reported them as "illegal dumping" and the city switched them to "in progress" pretty quickly... on a Sunday.

I also resubmitted a couple from Broad and Bainbridge from a couple weeks ago.  I put the pictures in the comments section of an overall submission about the building and its windows.  Unfortunately, even an efficient bureaucracy won't go above and beyond.

Any thoughts?
